Meta is gradually rolling out an MCP server that allows AI agents to set up and configure WhatsApp Business messaging. TechRadar reports that the Meta Business Messaging MCP is currently discoverable through Claude, Codex and ChatGPT, although Meta describes the release as intended for development and testing workflows.

Agents Take Over Setup

The server gives compatible agents tools to create business accounts, add and verify phone numbers, manage message templates and make the required API calls. Users can describe the setup they need instead of completing each task across Meta’s separate administration interfaces.

Meta acknowledged that WhatsApp Business onboarding has become fragmented across the Meta Developer Console, Business Manager and other dashboards. The MCP connection is designed to consolidate those steps through an agent-driven workflow, potentially reducing administrative work for businesses adopting the messaging platform.

Checks Before Actions

According to Meta product marketing manager Zoë Lieberman, the server performs authorization and compliance checks before running a tool. It confirms that the user is an administrator of the relevant app, identifies the attached business and verifies that its Terms of Service have been signed.

These checks limit which users can initiate account changes, but the source does not detail broader security controls, approval options or recovery procedures for incorrect agent actions. It also does not specify whether every supported agent can perform the same set of operations.

Testing Release

Meta is seeking feedback during the initial release and is making access available gradually. The source does not provide a complete rollout schedule, eligibility requirements or general-availability date, so businesses should treat the MCP server as a testing tool rather than a finished production service.

The connection is not restricted to Meta AI: the MCP approach allows third-party agents to interact with the WhatsApp Business setup tools. For developers and business administrators, the immediate change is access to conversational account configuration within the three currently listed agent environments.
