Major financial institutions are changing their approach to artificial intelligence by shifting from purchasing standard software tools to investing directly in and co-building AI startups. Global enterprise banks and domestic lenders are taking equity stakes and initiating co-development partnerships to shape product architecture around specialized financial workflows.
Custom Architecture and Regulatory Demands Drive Direct Backing
Across the 50 largest global banks, investments in AI companies have expanded at a compound annual growth rate of 21% since 2023, according to Inc42. Financial workflows require tailored systems that adhere to strict internal data controls, risk tolerances, and compliance standards. By securing investment stakes or co-development agreements, banks gain direct influence over startup roadmaps while providing early-stage companies with proprietary operational environments for testing.
Indian Financial Institutions Deploy Capital into Niche AI Tools
In India, several top lenders are actively funding domain-specific platforms. HDFC Bank and Canara Bank have invested in AI startup CoRover, while IDFC FIRST Bank has partnered with Sarvam to research self-improving financial systems and AI safety. Meanwhile, Bajaj Finance has designated ₹1,500 Cr specifically to back AI platforms. Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank are working alongside specialized voice AI startups to build internal operational workflows that are difficult to construct using standardized off-the-shelf products.
Startups Gain Assets as Enterprise Workforces Adapt
These partnerships allow startups to bypass traditional sales cycles by securing access to proprietary banking data, large user bases, and regulatory testbeds. However, increased automation is also altering bank workforce dynamics. Axis Bank reduced its workforce by 3,100 employees in FY26, while other institutions report linking AI deployments to improved worker productivity and moderated headcount expansion.
