Lunacy Audio has launched Nova, a platform that combines playable music instruments, a storefront and a host plugin for digital audio workstations. Ten instruments are available initially, while the broader Nova Builder system for creating and remixing plugins is planned for a later release.

One Library, Multiple Environments

Nova instruments can run directly in a web browser without dedicated hardware or a digital audio workstation. Musicians who work inside a DAW can instead use the Nova host plugin to browse their libraries, load instruments and switch between them.

The initial catalog includes 10 plugins made by Lunacy and selected development partners. The collection covers styles including chiptune, vintage synthesizer sounds and ambient textures, generally through streamlined interfaces with a limited set of controls.

Builder Still to Come

Nova's main development feature is not part of the initial release. Lunacy says Nova Builder will eventually let users assemble music tools from premade effects blocks and AI prompts instead of writing code in a text editor. The company also intends to let creators sell their work through the platform, although the source provides no timing or commercial terms for that capability.

The planned system will support remixing existing tools as well as creating new ones. Lunacy's concept allows a user to modify another creator's shared plugin, add components to its signal chain and distribute the resulting version for further changes.

A Cautious Audience

Nova is entering a music software community that The Verge describes as wary of AI-based creative tools, with reactions to comparable products ranging from cautious interest to hostility. Lunacy is publishing development diaries and seeking user feedback while building Nova, an approach intended to address musicians' concerns before the creator tools receive a wider release.
