Developer Jagex has announced RuneScape 4, a new massively multiplayer online entry in its long-running fantasy franchise, during the annual RuneFest convention. According to reporting by MMORPG.com, the working title represents the next major numerical iteration of the series following RuneScape 3's release in 2013. A brief teaser trailer showcased an art style that combines elements of RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape while building on the aesthetic of Jagex's survival game Dragonwilds.
Origin as a Dragonwilds Expansion
The project did not originate as a standalone title. It initially began as a planned expansion for Dragonwilds before Jagex adjusted its direction. A Jagex developer noted that feedback from playtesters drove the pivot, as players repeatedly requested a traditional MMO framework using the survival title's setting and visual style.
Engine and Development Timeline
RuneScape 4 is being developed using Unreal Engine, though Jagex has not specified whether the project uses Unreal Engine 5 or the upcoming Unreal Engine 6. The original Dragonwilds expansion was aimed for a 2027 release target, but expanding the project's scope into a complete MMO sequel has likely delayed that timeframe.
Series Iterations
The new project marks the fourth designated generation in the series' history. The original RuneScape launched in 2001, followed by RuneScape 2 in 2004, which introduced 3D graphics and served as the base for Old School RuneScape. RuneScape 3 arrived in 2013 with major overhauls to core systems and visual design, serving as the main active fork prior to the RuneScape 4 announcement.
