Apple's foldable iPhone Duo will arrive in October with an iOS interface designed around its inner and external displays, according to an Engadget report dated September 21, 2026. Its exclusive software includes side-by-side apps, Apple Pencil support, layouts that respond to the hinge position and camera tools that use both screens.
Two Apps on the Inner Screen
The iPhone Duo is described as the first iPhone able to display two apps simultaneously. Its implementation borrows from iPad multitasking but does not include the full Stage Manager system or floating windows. Users can select a pair of apps for the larger inner display, while the Home Screen can remain visible on one side during app use.
Apple has also rearranged familiar interface elements to preserve usable space. Engadget says the status indicators move to the right, where cellular, Wi-Fi and battery information are grouped alongside the Dock and Dynamic Island.
Layouts Respond to the Fold
Hinge awareness lets iOS reorganize controls as the device changes position. When the phone is folded halfway, an app can place its content on the upper section and controls such as the keyboard below, while interactive elements can move away from the crease. A tent configuration can turn the device into a table clock, with the inner display lighting when an alarm sounds.
External Display Expands the Camera
The outer screen can serve as a live preview when taking pictures or recording with the rear camera. Smart Take is said to use AI to capture a photo when the subject poses, without requiring a shutter press or timer. Kid Cue displays a Snoopy animation to draw a child's attention toward the camera, while FaceTime can show feeds from the front and rear cameras and use the external display for nearby participants.
Not a Pro Camera Substitute
The foldable design brings software capabilities unavailable on standard iPhones, but it does not match every camera feature attributed to the iPhone 18 Pro. Engadget reports that the iPhone Duo lacks that model's variable-aperture lens and pro controls, making its tradeoff primarily about the folding format and dual-screen workflows rather than the broadest camera toolset.
