Intel PresentMon 2.6.0 Cuts Monitoring CPU Usage by Up to 78%

Intel has released PresentMon 2.6.0, an update to its frame-time and performance-monitoring tool that the company says cuts the software’s own CPU usage by up to 78%. The change is intended to reduce the chance that continuous monitoring affects the results being measured.

Lower background overhead

The reduction comes from using less aggressive timing for Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) flushing and other background tasks that do not require split-second execution. Diagnostic log flushing has also been adjusted to reduce idle CPU activity while PresentMon runs in the background and captures frame data.

A different view of smoothness

Version 2.6.0 adds a Game Experience preset for the overlay. Rather than centering the display on conventional frame-rate and frame-time figures, the preset emphasizes metrics Intel says are more closely associated with the perceived smoothness of motion and animation during play. The source does not identify the individual metrics in this report.

More flexible telemetry

The update also supports per-metric multi-device selection, allowing telemetry from more than one GPU to appear in the same overlay. Metrics that are unavailable no longer vanish from the selection panel; they remain visible in a dimmed state with an explanation. That should make it clearer which measurements cannot be used in a particular setup.

PresentMon 2.6.0 is described as free and open source, and Intel says it is available through the company’s PresentMon page. The reported 78% reduction is an Intel claim; the supplied source does not provide independent testing or a specific hardware configuration for that figure.
