Google is expanding its health metrics suite with new blood pressure trend monitoring and estimated insulin resistance tracking. The features are rolling out under the Health Guardian banner within version 5.09 of the Google Health app on Android, targeting Google's newer smartwatch hardware.

Supported Devices and Subscription Details

According to Google, the Health Guardian tools are available at no extra cost to owners of the Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5. Fitbit Air users are scheduled to receive the updates later in the year, though access on that device will require a Google Health Premium subscription priced at $9.99 per month. Older Fitbit models are not included in the rollout.

How Algorithmic Health Tracking Works

Rather than functioning as direct medical diagnostic tools, the new metrics rely on algorithmic estimates. Research published by Google shows that its insulin resistance feature evaluates gathered sensor data—including heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and general physical activity—to calculate trends. Google explicitly notes that the metric is not intended for medical purposes or as a screening tool for diabetes, which traditionally requires laboratory blood tests such as fasting glucose and fasting insulin.

Setup and Wear Requirements

Users can configure the tracking options in the updated Google Health app by navigating to dedicated sections under the Health tab: Metabolic for insulin resistance and Heart for blood pressure trends. To generate initial monthly reports scheduled for release on Oct. 1, Google requires specific wear durations during September. The blood pressure trend report demands five consecutive days of usage, while the insulin resistance baseline requires at least seven days and nights of wear.
