Google Maps has introduced a limited-edition McLaren F1 driving avatar to celebrate the United States Grand Prix. According to a report by Android Central, the temporary theme allows drivers to swap the traditional navigation directional marker for a detailed race car icon during active turn-by-turn navigation.

Customizing Navigation Icons in Google Maps

Google Maps has allowed users to customize the primary navigation marker for some time, providing alternatives to the classic blue directional arrow such as basic sedans, trucks, and generic sports cars. The new collaboration with McLaren expands these customization options by adding an officially branded Formula 1 vehicle option to the existing avatar catalog.

Selecting the McLaren F1 Vehicle Avatar

To apply the McLaren F1 icon, users must open the Google Maps application on their mobile device, tap their user profile icon, and open the Settings menu. From there, selecting "Your vehicles" followed by "Driving avatar" opens the vehicle choice list where the new McLaren F1 option resides.

Once selected, the stylized race car renders on the main map interface, tracking user movement along active driving routes. The design closely mirrors the appearance of an authentic McLaren F1 racing vehicle while maintaining compatibility with standard navigation overlays.

Availability Window and Rollout Details

The themed avatar is available for a restricted period tied to the racing event. Google has indicated that the option to select the McLaren F1 avatar will end on November 23, 2026, after which the setting is expected to be removed from the application.

The feature is being deployed through a server-side expansion rather than a mandatory app update. Android Central observed the feature active on an iPhone Air running the current Google Maps version, while a Pixel 11 Pro running the same software version had not yet received the update. Users missing the feature are advised to check back as Google broadens device eligibility.
