Google is expanding Motion Assist, its Android feature designed to reduce motion sickness during screen use in moving vehicles, beyond Pixel phones. The rollout is arriving through Google Play services, although it requires an Android 17 or newer device running Google Play services v26.37.
How Motion Assist Works
Motion Assist places small bubbles around the display edges and moves them in response to information from the phone's motion sensors. The visual movement is intended to give the eyes a reference that more closely follows the vehicle's motion, potentially reducing the sensory mismatch associated with motion sickness.
Controls And Availability
Users can customize the bubbles' opacity, color and shape. The feature can activate when the phone detects travel in a moving vehicle, or it can be enabled manually from Quick Settings. Google first brought Motion Assist to Pixel phones in a September Pixel Drop; the newer Play services rollout extends it to compatible non-Pixel devices.
What The Update Also Includes
The September 21 update also covers several unrelated Android changes. Google is working on easier transfers of real-time health metrics from Wear OS watches to phones, simpler access to Driving Do Not Disturb, and larger, refined system emoji fonts. Google Play Store v53.3 adds local-currency purchases in Argentina, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Ethiopia, changes to Wear search results, and wishlist support for some pre-registered paid apps or games after launch.
