Google Begins Rolling Out Android Developer Verification Requirements

Google has officially started enforcing its developer verification requirements for Android, beginning with an initial rollout across Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Taking effect on September 30, the policy requires apps installed through participating app stores on certified devices running Android 7 or newer to originate from a verified developer.

Participating Ecosystems and Sideloading Changes

The mandate currently applies to downloads from major app platforms including the Google Play Store, Samsung's Galaxy Store, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Xiaomi GetApps, vivo V-Appstore, and Transsion's Palm Store. Under the initial phase, installs from these participating stores must clear developer verification checks.

Google plans to extend these restrictions globally in 2027. Once fully deployed, users will face new restrictions when attempting to sideload software from unverified sources outside recognized app stores. To bypass verification, users must activate a dedicated setting within Developer Options, complete authentication, reboot their device, and observe a compulsory 24-hour delay. Following the delay, installs from unverified developers can be authorized for a seven-day window or permanently, while installations conducted over ADB remain unaffected by the waiting period.

Security Goals and Community Response

Google states that the added friction is intended to curb fraudulent schemes that trick users into installing harmful applications onto their devices. However, the policy has drawn pushback from part of the user base. In a poll conducted by Android Authority earlier this year, 82% of respondents viewed the changes as excessive or detrimental to the open nature of the Android operating system.

While users outside the initial four launch countries experience no immediate changes today, the current deployment serves as the operational baseline for Google's planned worldwide implementation on certified Android hardware.
