GitLab Expands DevSecOps Platform to Govern AI Agent Workflows

GitLab has announced new platform capabilities designed to enforce organizational policies and security standards across AI-driven development workflows. The updates aim to address security risks associated with fragmented software pipelines, where AI tools, issue tracking, and continuous integration environments frequently operate without unified governance or consistent access logging.

Securing the Agentic Supply Chain

To prevent automated tools from pulling unvetted software packages into production builds, GitLab introduced the Dependency Firewall. The feature blocks malicious, vulnerable, or non-compliant dependencies before they reach the build stage. GitLab also outlined the GitLab Security Standard, which defines five core controls to shorten the window between vulnerability detection and verified remediation. In addition, Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 and 5.1 models will be integrated into the GitLab Duo Agent Platform to assist in identifying and resolving security flaws along the release pipeline.

Centralized Secrets and Artifact Management

To manage build outputs, GitLab introduced GitLab Artifact Central in beta, creating a single repository for software artifacts directly alongside source code and CI pipelines. For credential management, GitLab Secrets Manager reached general availability on GitLab.com and GitLab Self-Managed version 19.5. The feature centralizes build-time secrets, restricts access permissions to specific pipeline jobs, and records every interaction within the main GitLab audit log.

Contextual Knowledge and Impact Tracking

To streamline task transitions across teams, GitLab added `/goal` command support within the Duo Agent Platform and GitLab for Slack integration. The system also utilizes GitLab Orbit, a contextual engine introduced in beta in June that maps software lifecycle data for AI consumption. GitLab claims Orbit enables agents to complete tasks with up to 45 times fewer retries and 4.5 times lower token usage. To track deployment costs, GitLab introduced Duo Agent Platform Impact Analytics, providing metrics on AI delivery expenditure broken down by team, task, and underlying model.
