GitHub Releases Local Sandboxing for Copilot Agent Workflows

GitHub has announced the general availability of local sandboxing for GitHub Copilot, providing developers with dedicated security boundaries for AI agent workflows running directly on their local machines. The feature gives engineering teams precise control over how automated commands interact with system resources during coding tasks.

Native Cross-Platform Isolation

The sandboxing architecture relies on Microsoft eXecution Container (MXC) technology. MXC takes a unified sandbox policy and translates it into native operating-system controls across Windows, macOS, and Linux environments.

A key element of this architecture is the functional separation between model execution and tool isolation. Containment policies apply directly to tool execution on the host machine, maintaining consistent system restrictions regardless of which AI model powers the active Copilot session.

Granular Access Boundaries

Developers can use local sandboxing to define explicit limits on what agent-driven actions are permitted to inspect or alter. Policies can restrict file read and write access to specific paths and project directories, preventing agents from modifying unauthorized areas of the local filesystem.

Network and authentication safeguards are also included. Policies can restrict outbound internet traffic, local network access, and saved credentials for Git and the GitHub CLI. Furthermore, local sandboxing extends to integrated local tools and protocols, including language servers and local Model Context Protocol (MCP) services where supported.

Enterprise Security Mandates

For enterprise environments, administrators can deploy centralized settings that enforce local sandboxing across entire development organizations. These administrative policies establish mandatory boundaries that individual developers cannot bypass or degrade, allowing organizations to permit higher agent autonomy while preserving corporate security requirements.

Supported Tools and Availability

Local sandboxing is now available across several primary Copilot client interfaces, including the GitHub Copilot CLI, the standalone GitHub Copilot application, and VS Code sessions utilizing Agent Host. GitHub includes the local sandboxing capability in existing GitHub Copilot subscriptions at no additional cost.
