GitHub is expanding its Secret Protection framework to counter the security challenges of rapid code generation, introducing a fine-tuned ModernBERT classifier designed to identify unstructured credentials before commits enter repository history. Developed alongside Microsoft Applied Sciences, the model analyzes contextual candidate secrets in under two milliseconds, aiming to more than double the volume of leaked credentials prevented at the push boundary.
Surging Code Creation Escalates Credential Exposure
According to data released by GitHub, one in three pull requests on the platform now involves an AI agent, up from fewer than one in ten a year prior. Across nine quarters of tracking between Q2 2024 and Q2 2026, total screened pushes grew 2.84 times while pushes containing credentials rose 2.59 times. Developer overrides on push protection blocks declined steadily from 6.63% to 3.93% over the same period, indicating that developer awareness of exposure risks has increased alongside automated software creation.
Remediation Delays Emphasize Automated Prevention
Although GitHub reported an average of 26 public credential matches per second in Q2 2026, manual remediation remains a major bottleneck. The mean time to manually revoke an exposed secret stands at roughly 40 days, with about one in five exposures taking longer than 90 days to process. Traditional push protection stops approximately 30% of newly identified secrets prior to repository entry, leaving 70% to be discovered only after credentials have crossed the push boundary.
Fast Machine Learning Targets Unstructured Passwords
To identify internal database passwords and unstructured secrets that lack distinct provider prefixes, the ModernBERT model evaluates surrounding code context without producing prose or code output. The model is currently in private preview and is scheduled for broader availability later this month for organizations on GitHub Teams and Enterprise Cloud tiers using GitHub Secret Protection, where it will consume AI credits. GitHub is also integrating the classifier directly into developer environments through a new /security-review command in the Copilot CLI and Copilot App.
