GitHub Adds REST API Management for Code Coverage Rulesets

GitHub has made REST API management generally available for the Restrict code coverage repository ruleset option. Teams can now create, update and read the setting programmatically instead of configuring it exclusively through GitHub's web interface.

Coverage Controls

The ruleset supports two ways to govern coverage on pull requests: enforcing a minimum percentage based on line coverage or setting the maximum coverage decline that a pull request may introduce. The API exposes the configuration of those requirements, while the underlying policy remains part of GitHub's repository rulesets.

Automation at Scale

Programmatic access is primarily relevant to organizations that apply common engineering policies across many repositories. Administrators can incorporate coverage requirements into existing infrastructure-as-code processes, reducing reliance on repeated manual changes in the web interface and helping keep repository configurations consistent.

Required Setup

Repositories must have GitHub Code Quality enabled and must be configured to upload code coverage data before they can use the rule. The API support therefore changes how the ruleset is administered, but it does not remove the prerequisite coverage setup.

Platform Availability

The capability is available for GitHub Enterprise Cloud and GitHub Team, including GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency. GitHub Enterprise Server is not supported, so administrators running GitHub on their own infrastructure cannot use this API-managed coverage condition.
