Gato Roboto is now available on iOS and Android through Crunchyroll Game Vault, bringing the 2019 Metroidvania to mobile players with a Crunchyroll Mega Fan or Ultimate Fan membership. Its central mechanic has players alternate between Kiki, a vulnerable cat, and a heavily equipped mech suit while exploring an alien planet.
A Rescue Mission Underground
The story begins after Captain Gary crashes during a routine patrol. Gary is trapped in the wreckage and the other crew members are unconscious, leaving Kiki to cross the planet and attempt the rescue. Progress follows the familiar Metroidvania pattern of exploring connected areas, acquiring new abilities and returning to previously inaccessible routes.
Two Forms, Different Risks
Inside the mech, Kiki can use a blaster, break through rock with micro-missiles and reach higher ground with a double jump. Leaving the armor opens routes the machine cannot navigate: Kiki can pass through narrow pipes, swim and climb walls. That flexibility comes with a sharp limitation, because a single hit defeats her while she is outside the suit.
The switching mechanic makes exploration a tradeoff between protection and access. Players must abandon the mech's firepower and durability to enter confined spaces, then find a way through the environment without taking damage.
Compact Interconnected Areas
The map is divided into sectors that include a high-tech laboratory, an underwater aqueduct and a heater core. Upgrades such as the dash allow players to revisit those areas and reach places they could not enter earlier. The game also includes a pilotable submarine, controllable turrets, hidden health expansions and boss encounters.
Subscription Access Only
The mobile release gives an older indie game another route to players, but it is not presented as a standalone mobile purchase in the source. Access is tied to Crunchyroll Game Vault and requires either a Mega Fan or Ultimate Fan subscription, making the membership requirement the principal limitation for interested iOS and Android users.
