Echo Gap: a number puzzle where distance changes everything

Two threes are sitting on a puzzle board. You drop another tile. A pair disappears, the stack shifts, and a connection you had barely noticed turns into the next clear.

How much of that chain could you have planned?

That is the question behind Echo Gap, Patcell’s number puzzle for iPhone, iPad and Android. Its central rule is small enough to grasp quickly: two equal numbers disappear when they are exactly that many cells apart in the same row or column. Learning to recognise what that rule can do to a crowded board is the longer invitation.

If you enjoy spotting patterns, setting up a sequence or wondering whether one more attempt could improve your score, this is a game to put on your radar.

The useful space is between the numbers

Echo Gap’s tiles carry values from two to five. Each value tells you the distance its matching pair needs. A three looks for another three exactly three cell positions away; a four needs four.

That makes the gaps worth watching. You are choosing a landing column, but also looking at the numbers it will bring into range. A distant tile can become the partner you need. A space that seemed inconvenient can become the reason a move works.

Echo lines preview the landing and possible connections. The board gives you something concrete to read as you learn, then asks you to look beyond the immediate clear.

Try this before your next drop

Look at a pair you could clear. Now mentally remove it from the board.

Where would the tiles above it land? Would two matching values end up at the right distance? Would the falling stack open a new opportunity somewhere else?

That second question is what makes a chain interesting. The first clear changes the arrangement; gravity creates new relationships; another echo can follow. Chains multiply the score, turning the consequences of a move into part of its value.

You can begin by finding the obvious pair. With practice, you have a reason to think about the board that will exist after it disappears. The next useful connection may still be hidden inside the current stack.

A glowing board with growing pressure

The presentation gives Echo Gap an immediately recognisable look: deep navy panels, luminous numbered tiles and bright echo lines. Behind that calm night-time palette, the board keeps asking for space.

Pressure rows push upward as you play, and the pace of that pressure increases during a run. Later, stones add obstacles that can be broken when caught inside an echo. A beautiful setup needs enough breathing room to become a real chain.

Resonance powers called Hammer, Tremor and Hush offer additional options, and Second Wind can save you once per run. These give you more to consider when a promising board becomes difficult.

Classic, a bigger board, and a daily reason to return

Classic uses a seven-by-nine grid. Reach a best Classic score of 5,000 and you unlock Wide, which expands the board to eight by eleven. It is a progression goal earned through play.

Daily Challenge gives everyone the same sequence for that day. It offers a fresh shared starting challenge for players who like coming back to a puzzle regularly. Leaderboards use Game Center on Apple devices and Google Play Games on Android.

One number. Several possibilities.

Patcell’s Sen Journey put classic logic puzzles inside a countryside adventure. Echo Gap explores a different idea: a single distance rule that keeps changing the possibilities on a number grid.

Its appeal starts with a question you can ask before every placement: what happens after this tile lands?

Find the first echo. Follow the falling tiles. See whether you can spot the next one before it happens.
