Dyson has launched the CameraJet, a connected electric toothbrush that combines brushing, water flossing and mouth rinsing with a built-in camera. According to TechRadar, the device uses imaging and machine learning to identify gaps between teeth and direct a jet of mouthrinse toward them.

One Device for Brushing and Flossing

The CameraJet is the result of six years of research and development at Dyson's oral healthcare labs, TechRadar reports. Its camera, Gap Optical Targeting system and fluid-delivery technology are designed to automate interdental cleaning while the user brushes.

Dyson's head of product development, Rich Bacon, said the company pursued the combined design after its research found that 9 in 10 people do not floss as regularly as they should. He also said many people brush for about 45 seconds, compared with an optimum duration of two minutes or, ideally, three.

App-Based Cleaning Feedback

The MyDyson app provides guided cleaning, coverage mapping and personalized feedback intended to show which areas have been cleaned and which may have been missed. Dyson describes the app as a closed ecosystem and says its immediate focus is on evidence-led information about brushing and interdental-cleaning habits.

Camera Privacy Limits

The bathroom camera creates an obvious privacy concern. Dyson told TechRadar that it operates only during live viewing or automatic jetting, and that images are not recorded or stored on either the toothbrush or its cloud systems. Those privacy assurances come from the company; the source does not describe an independent security assessment.

Early Component Problems

Some users have reported malfunctions on Reddit involving a small number of early production batches. Dyson acknowledged that those batches may have a component issue and said it was isolating the affected products and supporting customers.

The company also said global demand had produced supply shortages while it scaled production. TechRadar notes that the CameraJet has attracted both interest in its unusual design and questions about its price and whether a camera belongs in a toothbrush.
