Discord Rolls Out Automatic Age Groups With Optional Verification

Discord has begun assigning every user to an age group, replacing its earlier plan for a broad age-verification rollout with an automated classification system. The company says more than 90% of users will not need to submit additional proof, but accounts identified as teenagers or left unconfirmed will face restrictions unless an adult completes verification.

Automatic Classification

The system sorts accounts into Adult, Teen or Unconfirmed groups using signals such as account age and server memberships. Discord says it does not inspect messages, calls or shared content for this process. New accounts initially enter the Unconfirmed group while the system gathers enough information to classify them.

Accounts judged to belong to users aged 18 or older retain unrestricted access. Teen accounts, covering ages 13 through 17, receive additional protections, while Unconfirmed accounts are treated like teen accounts until their status changes.

Restrictions for Teen Accounts

Messages from people who are not friends are directed to the message-requests inbox by default, and only adult accounts can disable that behavior. Discord also warns teen users before they accept friend requests from people with whom they share no mutual connections.

Teen and Unconfirmed accounts cannot view images classified as sensitive by Discord's filters. They also lose access to age-restricted servers and channels and cannot use commands provided by age-restricted bots.

Ways to Correct Mistakes

Adults placed in a restricted group can confirm their age through a credit card check handled by Stripe, an age range supplied by Apple or Google Play, a Google Wallet pass, or AgeKey. Discord also supports an ID scan through Veratad and on-device facial age estimation using a video selfie. The company says it receives only the resulting age information, with other ID data deleted after verification and selfie video remaining on the device.

Accuracy and Privacy Limits

Discord acknowledges that automatic classification can incorrectly identify adults as teenagers or teenagers as adults. Correcting an error may require an adult to provide information to an external verification service, creating a privacy tradeoff for access to restricted features.

The broader record of age checks also presents security concerns. The source notes that Roblox's system was reportedly easy to bypass, while IDscan.net suffered a breach involving more than 150 million driver's licenses this month. Discord does not use IDscan.net, although images were exposed when its former support partner 5CA was breached last year.
