Cloudflare’s 2026 Founders’ Letter: AI Agents Reshape Web Traffic and Monetization

In its 2026 Annual Founders’ Letter, Cloudflare reports that automated traffic from AI agents surpassed human web traffic in May 2026, and projects agent-driven visits could reach 1,000 times human levels within five years. The company also announced new tools to let websites earn revenue when AI agents access their content, alongside partnerships aimed at preserving an open internet for new entrants.

The Scale of Agent Traffic

Cloudflare states that the web experienced a plateau or contraction from 2012 through 2025, followed by an explosion of new sites in mid-2025. While much of this growth is attributed to AI-generated content, the company emphasizes that the majority stems from non-coding individuals using “vibe coding” tools to build applications. Over 7 million developers now build on Cloudflare’s platform, though the letter notes that automated traffic overtook human traffic earlier than the company’s original second-half-of-2027 forecast.

Economic Impact on Small Businesses

The letter outlines a structural risk: AI agents survey hundreds of options to return a single recommendation, meaning 999 businesses bear the cost of serving the agent without receiving any benefit. Because agents prioritize entities with the most existing information—typically established incumbents—new entrants face reduced visibility. Cloudflare argues this dynamic could lead to market consolidation and a less robust business environment.

New Monetization and Crawler Tools

To address these imbalances, Cloudflare is introducing features that allow content creators and application builders to be compensated when AI agents use their work. The company is also optimizing crawler behavior so that bots fetch only changed content, reducing server load on the majority of sites that see no updates between visits. These capabilities are presented as part of a broader effort to realign incentives between agent operators and content hosts.
