Cloudflare made Python Workers generally available on September 21, 2026, giving developers a fully supported way to deploy Python applications on the Cloudflare Workers runtime. The release adds direct access to Cloudflare services and support for established Python web frameworks, databases and AI libraries.
Python Becomes a First-Class Option
Python Workers previously required developers to think about the JavaScript boundary when passing data to services such as Queues. Cloudflare says the runtime and Python SDK now handle those type conversions, allowing Python objects to be used directly with bindings for Workers AI, R2, D1, Hyperdrive, Durable Objects, Queues and Workflows.
Existing Web Frameworks Can Run on Workers
Built-in ASGI and WSGI connectors let applications built with FastAPI, Django, Flask and other compatible frameworks run inside Python Workers. The Workers platform takes the role normally filled by a web server, while the connectors translate requests and responses into the structures expected by Python applications.
Cloudflare also added a socket implementation that maps Python socket operations to the Workers connect API. This enables supported database drivers to reach PostgreSQL and MySQL through Hyperdrive, addressing an earlier limitation of the WebAssembly sandbox.
Broader Library Compatibility
Python Workers use a Pyodide-based interpreter compiled to WebAssembly. Packages containing native C, C++ or Rust extensions still need compatible WebAssembly builds, so not every Python package will work immediately. Cloudflare says the ecosystem is still adopting PyEmscripten, the platform standardized through the accepted PEP 783 proposal.
Networking work also allows HTTP clients used by libraries including openai, langchain and mcp to route requests through the JavaScript fetch API in WebAssembly environments. Developers can combine those libraries with Workers AI or route external model requests through Cloudflare AI Gateway.
Who the Release Affects
The GA release is aimed at Python developers deploying APIs, event-processing services and AI workflows without rewriting their applications in TypeScript. Cloudflare has published Python examples across its developer documentation and a repository of deployment patterns, while identifying performance, memory efficiency and wider package support as areas for further work.
