Ottawa-based defense contractor Calian and regional innovation hub Invest Ottawa announced at the GCXpo conference that they are opening the Northstar Defence Lab at Area X.O. Situated within an 1,850-acre research and development complex in Ottawa's west end, the facility will operate as a system-of-systems orchestration lab powered by Calian’s Athora platform.
Modular Architecture for Rapid Iteration
The Northstar Defence Lab focuses on connecting defense software and hardware built by specialized, independent suppliers rather than relying on single monolithic platforms. Powered by Calian’s Athora platform, the facility is designed to enable diverse technology products to share data securely and function as integrated operational networks. According to Chris Pogue, Calian’s president of defense and space, modern operational needs demand shorter development loops, allowing specialized defense tools to be updated quickly between missions.
Broad Partner Network and Sovereign Capabilities
Multiple Canadian companies are contributing specialized assets to the lab across artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, communications, sensing, and operational decision-support tools. Participating industry partners include ADGA, Anvil, Larus, Tactiql, Evertz Microsystems, Tessellate Robotics, 123 Cyber, and Cohere, with federal agency Export Development Canada joining as a commercialization partner. The facility represents the first node in a planned nationwide network of regional development labs, supporting Calian’s $100 million push to advance Canada's sovereign C5ISRT capabilities across command, control, cyber, surveillance, and targeting systems.
Testbed Infrastructure and Project Timeline
Calian is currently constructing the dedicated lab building at Area X.O, with completion scheduled for early next year. As an established test center for NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) program, Area X.O provides advanced communications networks, 16 kilometers of test track, dedicated drone airspace, and robotics testing environments. The site already hosts defense technology companies that utilize its physical and digital testing resources.
