ByteDance is reportedly accelerating the development of a personal AI agent to expand its Doubao ecosystem. According to TechNode, citing sources familiar with the matter and a report from Sina Tech, the project was internally codenamed Spell and has undergone internal testing since April. The initiative represents a shift for Doubao from standard prompt-response interactions toward an autonomous assistant capable of executing tasks on behalf of users.
Origins in Mobile Agent Technology
Spell was initially led by the Doubao Phone Assistant team to explore mobile task automation. While the project remained unannounced as the market for personal agents matured, recent international interest in products like Meta Muse and OpenAI's "o" reportedly prompted ByteDance to speed up development.
Rather than operating as a standalone project, Spell's technical features are being integrated into the core Doubao platform. TechNode reports that the original Spell team is collaborating with Doubao's conversational AI group to combine technical capabilities for an upcoming public release. This builds on earlier efforts, including a technical preview of Doubao's phone assistant in December 2025 and its consumer rollout in September.
Dual Strategy for Enterprise and Consumer AI
The upcoming personal agent complements ByteDance's existing focus on enterprise automation. On August 25, the company launched Doubao Work, an agent designed for office tasks such as drafting documents, taking meeting notes, and processing software data. Recent updates to Doubao Work introduced local Office file editing, multi-device task handoffs across up to five devices, and skill creation via screen recordings.
If released publicly, the new personal AI agent will establish a dual-track strategy for Doubao, addressing workplace workflows with Doubao Work while targeting everyday consumer task management with Spell's underlying technology.
