Dutch startup Boxd has raised $2 million in a pre-seed round to develop cloud computing infrastructure for software developers and AI coding agents. BlueYard Capital led the financing, joined by OVNI Capital, Antler, S20, Script Capital and business angels from General Intuition and other technology companies.

Persistent Machines for Agents

Founded by Michiel Voortman, Laurentiu Ciobanu and Hidde Kehrer, Boxd is building virtual machines that can execute code, run tests and support software development workflows. Its infrastructure is aimed at teams operating multiple AI coding agents in parallel, where each agent may need a dedicated environment that remains active for extended periods.

The company argues that conventional containers and individually managed virtual machines become harder to coordinate as the number of agents grows. It also identifies unsupervised code execution as a security concern, particularly when development environments are temporary or share underlying resources.

Live Copies of Running Systems

Boxd says teams can create cloud machines as needed and use snapshotting and live-forking to duplicate a running machine, including its memory and active connections, in under 100 milliseconds. That would let separate agents test competing solutions from the same system state without requiring developers to configure an independent environment for every attempt.

A Narrower Virtualization Layer

The startup's custom virtualization architecture concentrates on CPU, RAM, storage and networking rather than emulating peripheral hardware such as webcams, audio devices and USB ports. According to Boxd, removing those components reduces the software attack surface, while hardware-isolated persistent virtual machines preserve state after individual processes finish.

The performance and security statements are company claims in the report. The source does not provide customer deployments, comparative test results, pricing or broader availability details.

Funding the Build-Out

Boxd plans to use the pre-seed capital to hire more staff and continue developing its virtualization engine. The immediate focus is scaling infrastructure for developers and autonomous coding agents rather than building the agents themselves.
