Blizzard Entertainment has detailed its design philosophy for World of Warcraft: Forever, outlining how the studio plans to expand the original massive multiplayer online game while remaining faithful to its foundational systems. Speaking in an interview with TechRadar Gaming, the development team discussed the design framework guiding its "Classic Plus" approach ahead of the game's scheduled 2026 release window.

Four Pillars Guiding Classic Plus Development

Blizzard established four central pillars to evaluate prospective changes for World of Warcraft: Forever: Nurture and Protect Social Experiences, Approachable and Familiar, World as the Main Character, and Journey before destination. According to the studio, these principles were refined through years of managing legacy versions of the game. Rather than evaluating features by whether they are strictly classic, developers measure new concepts against these four pillars, discarding ideas that fail to support them to preserve the original pacing, tone, and world structure.

Bridging Modern Rendering and Legacy Art Style

To support the game's long-term sustainability, Blizzard is incorporating modern lighting and engine rendering updates into World of Warcraft: Forever. However, the studio is aiming for a middle ground in visual fidelity rather than matching 2004 technical constraints or modern retail expansion graphics. Blizzard explained that new visual assets are calibrated to fit naturally within the aesthetic range of Vanilla WoW, The Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King, reinforcing an approach centered on matching how players remember the original game.

Ecosystem Balance and Security Enforcement

In addition to technical updates and novel additions such as the Skyborne race, Blizzard is addressing ecosystem health within World of Warcraft: Forever. According to the studio, developers are actively tracking real-money trading across the platform. The team is also implementing anti-botting countermeasures intended to suppress automated activity and prevent issues that result in permanent player account bans.
