AWS Releases Strands Decider 2B to Speed Up Agentic AI Workflows

Amazon Web Services Inc.'s Strands Labs team has open-sourced Strands Decider 2B, a lightweight 2-billion-parameter artificial intelligence model designed to execute rapid decisions for agentic workflows. By removing the traditional text-generation phase, the model eliminates token-heavy responses and latency, delivering direct choices to streamline agent operations.

Architecture and Performance

Strands Decider 2B is built on top of the Qwen3.5-2B base torso, replacing the traditional output head with a customized 1-million-parameter pointer head. AWS fine-tuned the model using a rank-16 LoRA adapter to directly score available choices against answer positions. Designed for local execution and public cloud deployment, the model operates with less than 150 milliseconds of latency on local hardware. According to AWS benchmark tests, it achieved high accuracy and calibration scores on JevBench compared to rival open-source 2B models.

Use Cases and Operational Limitations

Because decision models omit text generation, each output is accompanied by a confidence score rather than a written explanation. AWS intends for developers to use the model for agentic tasks including tool selection, model routing, guardrail enforcement, context management, and policy classification, or within hybrid architectures that offload repetitive tasks from larger reasoning models.

The model weights are accessible on Hugging Face, while the underlying codebase, training scripts, and implementation examples are hosted on GitHub.
