Apple TV will upgrade its Formula 1 live coverage by introducing Dolby Atmos spatial audio, beginning with the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The feature replaces the stream's standard 5.1 surround sound setup with a three-dimensional audio format designed to place individual engine, car, and pit lane sounds within a virtual acoustic space.

Austin Launch Details

The spatial audio rollout begins during the Austin race weekend scheduled from October 22 to October 25, concluding with the Sunday main race. Apple has framed the event as the start of its Atmos initiative, though it has not clarified whether practice and qualifying sessions will receive the format or if every subsequent race after Austin will feature the three-dimensional audio feed.

Audio Production and Infrastructure

Dolby representative John Couling stated that the broadcast update utilizes F1's existing circuit microphones and trackside sensors, avoiding the need for new physical hardware installations at racing venues. Apple's focus on racing audio follows technical work on its feature film F1: The Movie, where sound engineers used around 150 trackside microphones to capture vehicle roars and environmental acoustics. Apple TV executive Oliver Schusser highlighted the move as part of an effort to address a lack of recent innovation in live sports viewing.

Compatibility and Broadcast Options

Accessing the Dolby Atmos mix requires equipment capable of processing the format, such as supported soundbars, home audio receivers, or Atmos-compatible televisions. Subscribers streaming via Apple TV 4K can also listen using Spatial Audio when connected to compatible headphones, including third-generation AirPods, newer AirPods Pro models, or AirPods Max. Traditional stereo sound setups will experience no audio change. The sound update adds to Apple TV's five-year US Formula 1 broadcasting rights, which currently include 4K Dolby Vision video, four-stream Multiview playback, live telemetry, onboard camera feeds, and Lock Screen updates through Live Activities.
