Apple is reportedly planning a return to the server market with systems designed for AI workloads. The Verge, citing The Information, says the proposed machines could combine Apple’s future M8 Ultra processors with Nvidia interconnect technology, but the product is not expected to debut before 2029 and the plans could still change.

A Return After Xserve

The project would mark Apple’s first dedicated server product since it retired the Xserve line in 2011. The company has largely stayed out of enterprise server hardware since then, but rising demand for AI computing has reportedly created an opening for systems built around its ARM-based M processors.

Apple’s Mac Mini and Mac Studio machines have already become popular among AI developers, according to the report, contributing to shortages. A purpose-built server could extend that demand into larger deployments while using the performance and efficiency characteristics associated with Apple silicon.

M8 Ultra Configurations

The reported server models would use either two or four M8 Ultra chips. That processor generation remains some distance away: Apple announced the M6 in August, while the server itself is described as unlikely to arrive until 2029. No final product name, configuration or availability commitment has been disclosed.

Possible Nvidia Link

Apple is also rumored to be considering Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology, which connects multiple processors so they can work together. Its inclusion could help coordinate the proposed M8 Ultra chips inside a larger AI system, although the source does not establish that Nvidia technology has been selected for the final design.

Such an arrangement would deepen recent cooperation between companies that have historically had a strained relationship. Apple has already turned to Nvidia chips for servers supporting its revamped Siri, according to the report. Any broader partnership around the planned hardware remains tentative because the server is several years from its reported launch window.
