Apple made macOS 27 Golden Gate available on September 14, adding a redesigned Siri that can use visible windows, selected screen regions and personal content as context. The update also expands Spotlight, introduces AI-assisted writing and page tracking, and revises the operating system's interface.

Siri Gains Screen Context

Siri can now answer questions about material displayed on a Mac, summarize it or retrieve related information. Users can press Command + Shift + Space to place the focused window into the assistant's context, or Command + Shift + 6 to select a specific region for a question or image search.

Visual Intelligence may also offer actions based on a selection, including creating a contact or looking up a location. This brings Siri closer to contextual assistants already built into some browsers and third-party Mac apps, while integrating the capability at the operating-system level.

Spotlight Searches Personal Content

Spotlight now accepts Siri questions and can return web answers. It also separates searches across applications, files, actions and clipboard content, while adding access to recent searches and the ability to run Shortcuts directly.

Because Siri can access files, email and messages, searches can surface personal details without requiring users to open the underlying documents or conversations. TechCrunch reported retrieving membership information, trip details and a work deadline during its testing, while finding Spotlight less extensible than Raycast.

Writing and Browser Tools Expand

The update lets users select text for proofreading, revision or rewriting, and Siri can draft content inside text fields. Finder and save dialogs can also suggest filenames based on context.

Safari adds AI-powered monitoring for changes to webpages, such as price updates, policy revisions or new posts where an RSS feed is unavailable. It can also group tabs automatically by topic.

New Interface and Compatibility

macOS 27 Golden Gate introduces Liquid Glass icons, a slider for adjusting the visual treatment, more consistent window corners, edge-to-edge sidebars and clearer highlighting of active windows. Other additions include enhanced child safety controls, shared cross-platform photo albums, improved Mail search, iPhone mirroring app resizing and calendar event suggestions.

The release supports Apple Silicon MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2020 onward, Apple Silicon iMac models from 2021 onward, Mac Mini models from 2020 onward, Mac Studio models from 2022 onward, Mac Pro models from 2023 onward, and MacBook Neo.
