AMD Plans $8.2 Billion World Labs Acquisition to Expand Into Spatial AI

AMD announced plans to acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion in stock, giving the chipmaker direct ownership of spatial-intelligence technology used to generate interactive 3D environments. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, after which World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li will become AMD’s executive vice president and chief scientist.

From Investor to Owner

The planned purchase follows AMD’s participation seven months earlier in a $1 billion World Labs funding round that valued the startup at $5 billion. Nvidia also participated in that financing. Those figures describe the prior funding and valuation, while the newly announced $8.2 billion figure is the stock consideration for AMD’s proposed acquisition.

Models for Simulated Worlds

Founded in 2024, World Labs develops world models designed to create interactive three-dimensional environments. Its newest model, Atlas, can generate a virtual representation of a factory or warehouse from a small number of photos, according to SiliconANGLE. It can also model moving equipment such as conveyor belts and supply depth information that helps AI systems locate objects.

Such environments can support robotics development by allowing models to practice tasks through trial and error in simulation before operating physical machines. Atlas also has media-generation uses, including producing images and videos from prompts and adding visual effects to existing footage.

Extending AMD’s Robotics Stack

Owning World Labs would move AMD beyond supplying processors toward influencing the simulation software used to train robotic systems. AMD already has robotics hardware exposure through Xilinx, the field-programmable gate array supplier it acquired for $50 billion in 2022, and through its Ryzen AI Embedded X100 chips, which combine CPU, GPU and AI acceleration in ruggedized packages.

AMD says World Labs will continue its AI research after the deal closes. The acquisition remains pending, so the organizational changes and tighter integration between World Labs’ models and AMD’s computing platforms have not yet taken effect.
