Amazon CloudWatch Omni is generally available as an observability service designed to explain AI-agent behavior, not merely report whether the surrounding system is healthy. According to SiliconANGLE, it combines continuous response evaluation with agent traces, application telemetry and infrastructure signals, giving developers and operators a shared path for investigating incorrect answers, tool calls and data retrieval.
Evaluation Becomes Operational Monitoring
Omni includes 17 built-in evaluators covering measures such as coherence, helpfulness, faithfulness and routing correctness. Teams can compare prompt versions, turn production traces into test datasets and continuously evaluate live traffic for quality regressions. This addresses failures that conventional latency and error metrics may miss when an agent produces a technically successful but incorrect response.
Development and Operations Share Traces
Developers can inspect local traces through extensions for Visual Studio Code, Cursor and Kiro without an AWS account. Operators use a separate web interface that supports single sign-on through identity providers including Okta and Microsoft Entra ID. Both experiences rely on the same data layer, allowing a trace captured during development to remain available during an operational investigation.
AWS DevOps Agent is enabled by default in investigation sessions to correlate signals and retain investigation history. Because Omni stores agent activity alongside application and infrastructure telemetry, an inquiry can follow a faulty tool result through an API problem to an underlying resource constraint without separating the evidence across unrelated systems.
Open Instrumentation, AWS Intelligence
Instrumentation uses OpenInference and the AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry, including for agents operating outside AWS. Supported frameworks and SDKs include LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, the OpenAI Agents SDK, Strands and the Vercel AI SDK, while DeepEval can supply third-party evaluation. Azure ingestion is currently supported, and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore agents receive Omni automatically.
The open telemetry layer does not make the entire service portable. Omni's topology, evaluators, investigation records and DevOps Agent remain AWS services, a material consideration for organizations whose primary observability platform spans several clouds.
Telemetry Volume Is the Cost Constraint
The IDE extension, dashboards and alerts are free, while customers pay for telemetry ingestion and storage. Queries totaling up to five times monthly ingestion volume are included, and eligible accounts receive a 30-day trial with $1,000 in OpenTelemetry ingestion credits. DevOps Agent is priced separately. Because prompts, model calls, tool invocations and agent handoffs each create spans, production teams will need to manage sampling, retention and evaluation frequency as deployments grow.
