Apple’s latest AirPods software update adds a long-requested custom equalizer, allowing owners of supported models to adjust low, mid and high frequencies from the Settings app. The feature arrives alongside iOS 27-related changes for AirPods, according to 9to5Mac.
Supported models and builds
The update applies to AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro 2 with Lightning or USB-C, and AirPods Max 2. The reported firmware builds are 9A350 for AirPods 5 and 9A348 for the other listed models.
Apple says firmware updates install automatically while the earbuds or headphones are charging and within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad or Mac connected to Wi-Fi. Users can check the installed version in the iPhone Settings app.
A basic three-band control
Custom EQ appears in the AirPods section of Settings under Audio and Routing. The controls cover lows, mids and highs, and users can play an Apple Music track within Settings while adjusting the sound.
The feature is available on AirPods models with Apple’s H2 chip, including AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods Max 2. It is a three-band system rather than an advanced equalizer, so the adjustment range is limited to broad tonal changes.
Other iOS 27 changes
The AirPods settings interface has also been reorganized, with separate areas for Hearing Health, Find My and Live Translation. An Adaptive Audio slider provides additional tuning, while GymKit support now works with an iPhone and AirPods Pro 3 without requiring an Apple Watch.
The update also adds Precision Finding for AirPods Pro 3 through Find My on Apple Watch and lets AirPods interact with Siri AI when paired with a compatible iPhone. The source does not specify a separate installation process beyond Apple’s automatic firmware update behavior.
