Spain's data protection agency, AEPD, has received what it describes as its first notification of a personal-data breach reportedly carried out using an autonomous AI agent. According to AEPD president and deputy Francisco Pérez Bes, the agent accessed a Spanish company's systems, searched for vulnerabilities, exploited a flaw, modified personal data and reached invoices. The incident remains under investigation, and few details about the affected organization or agent have been disclosed.
A Multistage Intrusion
The reported intrusion began with publicly accessible files that enabled the agent to log into the target's system, Pérez Bes said. Once inside, it scanned for weaknesses and used a discovered vulnerability to alter personal information and obtain access to invoice records. The account indicates that one agent connected several stages normally treated as separate security events, from initial access to reconnaissance and exploitation.
What Remains Unknown
AEPD has not identified the company, the large language model or its provider. The investigation has also not yet established a fuller technical timeline or explained how the publicly available files enabled authentication. Pérez Bes cautioned that the reported use of an agent does not mean the underlying model or the provider's infrastructure was compromised or intentionally malicious.
Faster Attacks, Shorter Response Windows
The agency's concern centers on speed and coordination. Pérez Bes said an AI agent can inspect multiple assets, try different attack paths and change its behavior based on the results. That could make incident procedures designed around manually conducted attacks too slow, particularly when an account or API key allows rapid movement between services.
Security Assessments May Need Updating
Pérez Bes urged organizations handling personal data to include AI-assisted and AI-driven attacks in their risk assessments. He also highlighted identity and credential controls, along with faster detection and response, because an agent using valid access could operate across services before defenders recognize anomalous activity. These are recommendations arising from an ongoing case rather than findings from a completed investigation.
