Nightdive Studios has released a new trailer for Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, shown during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct 2026. GamingOnLinux reported the footage on September 21, but the studio has not announced a release date.

The Original Campaign Returns

The remaster brings the pioneering 3D stealth game to Nightdive's proprietary KEX Engine. Its package covers the original game's 12 missions as well as the three additional missions from the Thief: Gold update, which also expanded the story and introduced five enemy types.

Its focus remains a substantial mission-based stealth experience rather than a newly designed sequel. A mission selector will let players revisit any mission they have already completed, while small adjustments to the original level layouts are intended to address existing issues.

Modern Controls and Presentation

Nightdive lists support for visuals at up to 4K and 120 frames per second, alongside upgraded textures, models and animations. The studio is also adding achievements and a collection of behind-the-scenes material called the Vault.

Modern gamepad features include rumble, motion and gyro controls. New weapon and item wheels are designed to reduce the friction of selecting tools and gadgets, making the older control scheme more approachable without changing the underlying mission structure described by the studio.

Custom Campaign Support

Built-in custom campaign support could be particularly important for returning players, with Nightdive saying it will provide access to thousands of hours of additional content. The source does not specify how those campaigns will be distributed or managed, however.

The expanded controls and presentation may appeal to players interested in classic stealth games but reluctant to navigate older interfaces. The main limitation is timing: without a release date, the trailer and feature list offer no indication of when the remaster will be available.
