Microsoft has become the publisher of Kojima Productions' Physint after Sony ended its financial support for the game. Hideo Kojima told IGN that Sony disclosed its decision during a Zoom call in June, leaving his studio to find another partner during a three-month pitching effort.

Sony Withdraws Support

Kojima said he had expected Physint to remain protected despite widespread studio closures and project cancellations across the games industry. Sony did not provide a reason that he has publicly disclosed, although Kojima noted that executives with whom he had longstanding relationships had left or retired from the company.

The cancellation of Sony's funding created an immediate financial concern for Kojima Productions, which was also developing the horror game OD. Kojima said the company had borrowed from a bank and that losing one of its two projects could have threatened cash flow, jobs and the studio's continued operation.

A Broader Pitch

Rather than seeking backing for Physint solely as a game, Kojima presented it as a new intellectual property that could extend into film, television, anime, comics and music. He approached multiple potential partners but sought a company capable of supporting both the game and those wider media plans.

Microsoft Becomes Publisher

Kojima ultimately approached Xbox, citing its technical capabilities and Kojima Productions' existing relationship with Microsoft through OD. Microsoft subsequently agreed to publish Physint, keeping the project alive after Sony's departure.

The report does not establish why Sony withdrew or provide new details about Physint's release schedule and gameplay. Microsoft is also conducting substantial job reductions and has separated from studios including Double Fine and Compulsion Games, making its long-term commitment a material consideration even though the publishing agreement currently preserves the project.
