Valve's September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey reveals a notable shift in PC gaming memory configurations. According to survey data reported by TechPowerUp, systems equipped with 32 GB of RAM have surpassed 16 GB configurations to become the most common memory capacity among participating users.

Memory Milestones and System Hardware Shifts

In the September results, the 32 GB RAM tier rose by 4.77 percentage points to hit 42.22% adoption. Concurrently, 16 GB configurations dropped 3.38 points to 37.82%. This marks a reversal from August 2026, when 16 GB led the survey with 41.20% compared to 37.45% for 32 GB. Valve's data tracks total capacity only, omitting details regarding memory speeds or whether systems utilize DDR4 or DDR5 memory modules. The growth aligns with recent game releases increasingly specifying 16 GB as a minimum system requirement and recommending 32 GB.

The survey highlighted additional hardware changes across participating systems. AMD gained 1.89 percentage points among Windows users, bringing its CPU share to 47.41%. On the graphics side, Nvidia's GeForce RTX 5070 emerged as the single most common GPU, rising 2.30 points to reach a 5.86% share. Meanwhile, 1440p primary display usage grew 5.18 points to reach 27.04%, and Windows 11 adoption expanded to 71.34%.

Sampling Variations and Demographic Influences

While the metrics indicate a rapid transition toward higher memory capacities, the opt-in nature of Valve's survey introduces potential sample fluctuations. The September survey pool saw significant shifts in regional demographics; notably, systems set to Simplified Chinese increased by 7.42 percentage points to account for 31.39% of all surveyed participants. TechPowerUp notes that these variations in the sampled user base could partially account for the sharp monthly swing, making subsequent survey iterations critical to determining whether 32 GB maintains its leading position.
