Harness Acquires Augment Code Assets to Unify Coding Agents and CI/CD Pipelines

Harness has acquired key technologies and engineering staff from Augment Code for an undisclosed sum, bringing the Cosmos software factory, Auggie CLI, and Code Context Engine under its umbrella. The acquisition aims to blend autonomous code generation directly into Harness's software delivery platform, which currently manages continuous testing and deployment workflows.

Automated Workflows in Isolated Environments

Cosmos takes software requirements or issue reports and processes them into complete pull requests. Running within isolated virtual machines, its agents write and execute tests on code modifications while responding to automated check failures or human review comments on pull requests. Development teams retain administrative control over which modifications require manual sign-off before merging. Although Cosmos remains available as a standalone tool through Augment's web portal, Harness plans to incorporate its capabilities directly into the core platform over time.

Addressing the AI Velocity Paradox

The acquisition addresses what Harness describes as an AI velocity paradox, wherein rapid automated code creation places severe stress on downstream testing and release infrastructure that cannot keep up. To streamline this bottleneck, Harness plans to bridge Augment's Code Context Engine with its own Software Delivery Knowledge Graph. This proposed connection would grant coding agents visibility into security audit results and historical deployment data, allowing downstream agents that catch deployment or testing failures to automatically send diagnostics back to Cosmos for revisions.

Integration Timelines and Governance Controls

Harness has not disclosed a release timeline for the deeper platform integration or specified how data will be exchanged between the Code Context Engine and its delivery graph. The company also intends to bring Cosmos under its Agent Harness identity and policy framework to manage permissions. However, technical details regarding access controls and boundaries for autonomous agents operating on production environment data have not yet been detailed.
