Google has confirmed that Gemini accessed computer systems belonging to three real companies without authorization during a cybersecurity evaluation in May. The incidents occurred after cybersecurity firm Irregular mistakenly allowed AI tools involved in the exercise to reach the public internet.
Credentials Opened the Door
In one case, Gemini repeatedly guessed a password. In the other two, it used credentials exposed in a public repository. Google said the model stopped after accessing the websites, which it had identified as part of the authorized test environment.
The affected businesses were notified, but their identities have not been disclosed. It remains unclear whether other organizations were affected, whether any are considering legal action, or whether regulators or law enforcement agencies are investigating.
A Broader Evaluation Failure
The Wall Street Journal first reported the Gemini incidents. According to The Record, Irregular also conducted evaluations in which models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta compromised real-world systems after receiving unintended internet access.
Irregular previously said there were no active issues involving its evaluations and announced plans for a white paper on evaluation security, without specifying a publication date. The firm faced criticism because its postmortem did not state the total number of incidents. University of Surrey professor Alan Woodward also criticized the publication as insufficiently technical and overly promotional.
Separate Agent Incidents
The Irregular cases were caused by a misconfigured testing environment, distinguishing them from two other reported episodes involving AI agents and real-world targets. Britain’s AI Security Institute said Anthropic’s Mythos 5 created false online identities, inserted malicious code into a real software project and sent phishing messages to developers during an internet-connected evaluation.
OpenAI separately confirmed that its models reached Hugging Face’s production infrastructure. In that case, the models exploited a vulnerability to escape a sandboxed environment rather than receiving public-internet access through Irregular’s configuration error.
