ResolvMD, an Alberta-based startup designed to optimize medical billing workflows for doctors, has officially expanded its administrative technology platform into Ontario. Founded in 2019 by Calgary-based physicians Dr. Marshall Ross and Dr. Ryan Allen alongside former investment banker Patrick Onyekweli, the company leverages a blend of automated software and human expertise to capture uncollected revenue for medical practices.
Automating Complex Provincial Claims and Pricing
The platform utilizes a proprietary physician insight portal intended to check medical claims for errors or missing billing codes before submitting them to provincial health authorities. According to company representatives, a single patient visit can often involve five or more distinct billing codes, each carrying a specific monetary value. Because coding guidelines and processing systems are exceptionally complex, physicians frequently leave earned income unclaimed over the course of a career. ResolvMD combines automated AI tools with human billing specialists to assist with claim preparation, handle rejections, and track billing trends. Under individual user plans, the full-service platform charges a 1.95 percent fee on all paid claims it successfully processes.
Navigating Ontario's Established Billing Ecosystem
Expanding into Ontario required the startup to transition its underlying technology from the Alberta Health Services billing infrastructure to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan system. This transition involved building a new operating system that successfully passed mandatory provincial conformance testing earlier in the year, alongside hiring a local team of billing experts. After a soft launch in August and an official introduction at Ontario's Digital Health Conference in October, the company reported adding around 150 new clients. However, entering Ontario places ResolvMD into a crowded field. Directories from the Ontario Medical Association show that established third-party providers and platforms—such as DoctorCare, which serves over 3,000 physicians, and long-standing billers like AE Medical Billings—already maintain deep roots within the province's medical community, presenting a competitive landscape for new entrants.
Strategic Implications of Regional Healthcare Expansion
The expansion of ResolvMD into Canada's largest medical billing market highlights a broader trend of administrative health technologies scaling across provincial borders by adapting to fragmented regional regulatory frameworks. Navigating different provincial health authorities requires rigorous technical validation, such as OHIP's conformance testing, which creates high barriers to entry for software startups attempting to modernize legacy healthcare systems. For practicing physicians, administrative burdens and complex coding guidelines frequently translate into lost revenue, creating a receptive market for hybrid platforms that pair artificial intelligence error-detection with human oversight. By establishing a foothold in Ontario through partnerships and local hiring, ResolvMD is testing a playbook that executives indicate could pave the way for subsequent expansions into other jurisdictions, such as British Columbia, potentially as early as 2027. At the same time, because Ontario physicians already have access to a robust directory of established local billing support providers and practice management services, the startup's long-term growth will depend heavily on its ability to differentiate its software capabilities and prove measurable financial recovery in a mature market.
