Atlassian State of Product Report Highlights AI Adoption and Evolving Tech Roles

Product teams are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into their day-to-day operations, though concerns remain over product differentiation in a market crowded with AI-native tools. According to Atlassian’s State of Product report, 76% of product teams express a fear of product failure, marking an 8% drop from the previous year's survey, with only 13% describing themselves as very concerned.

Shifting Responsibilities in Engineering Roles

The adoption of AI tools is changing how developers and product professionals spend their time. Atlassian reported that only 26% of respondents feel their daily work reflects what originally drew them to the field, while 29% spend little to no time on those initial core interests. Additionally, 67% of respondents agree that their current roles are difficult to define clearly.

Despite these role shifts, respondents noted satisfaction in moving toward higher-level responsibilities as automated tools handle code generation. Teams report focusing on revenue and profitability drivers (45%), developing solutions for customer needs (43%), cross-functional collaboration (41%), customer feedback analysis (36%), and product strategy shaping (35%).

AI Maturity and Operational Bottlenecks

AI usage has broadly transitioned past the testing phase, with 99% of product teams reporting full integration of AI into at least one workflow. Furthermore, 89% of respondents use AI to perform tasks previously handled by other functions, giving rise to new responsibilities such as managing autonomous agents and refining generated work output.

However, efficiency gains in development have not fully translated to faster delivery for end users. While 80% of teams state they are shipping products faster, customers are not receiving the benefits any sooner. Regarding feature desires, product documentation remains the top implemented use case, whereas AI-driven task prioritization remains an unrealized goal for most teams. Atlassian also noted that 53% of product teams have reclaimed time for strategic planning through AI assistance.
