Postman has announced the general availability of Fabric Gateway, a protocol-agnostic control plane designed to help organizations govern how artificial intelligence agents, large language models, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers interact with APIs and system tools. Deployed within an enterprise's own cloud environment, the gateway aims to centralize visibility and policy enforcement across autonomous AI interactions.
Unified Control for Agentic Traffic
Traditional API gateways were built for human users and conventional applications rather than autonomous systems that communicate continuously across platforms. Postman co-founder and chief executive officer Abhinav Asthana noted that enterprises require specialized infrastructure to control what agents can discover and access. Fabric Gateway addresses this by routing, managing, and observing agent-to-agent communications, MCP servers, LLMs, and internal APIs from a unified endpoint.
The platform replaces fragmented integrations with a unified registry that brings agent-facing interfaces, command-line interfaces, and APIs under one interface. Gartner projections cited in the announcement state that the growth of AI workloads will prompt 80% of organizations to replace or supplement existing API gateways by 2029, emphasizing the need for support for emerging formats like MCP and agent-to-agent protocols.
Policy Enforcement and Operational Reliability
Fabric Gateway provides policy-driven security that applies least-privilege access rules across various communication types, including HTTP, gRPC, MCP, and agent-to-agent interactions. Security and platform engineering teams gain centralized access to log, authenticate, classify, and authorize interactions prior to execution, creating an upfront compliance model across the entire agent lifecycle.
To maintain service uptime during provider degradation, the gateway incorporates built-in reliability features such as health-aware routing, circuit breakers, and fallback chains. These mechanisms keep request pipelines operational across multi-agent environments without requiring manual intervention.
