Sony has introduced a lottery system in Japan for purchasing the PlayStation 5 Pro console at MSRP, requiring applicants to meet specific gameplay thresholds. The measure comes as global DRAM shortages constrain manufacturing supplies for new hardware.
Playtime Requirements and Application Deadlines
To qualify for the lottery, gamers must have logged at least 60 hours of playtime between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. Setting September 27, 2026, as a firm cutoff date prevents users from attempting to rapidly accumulate hours after the announcement. Eligible players have until October 7 to apply, with selected buyers receiving notifications on October 26.
Winners who receive a notification email must complete their console purchase by November 2. Unclaimed lottery allocations will be returned to a pool for an additional drawing scheduled later in the year.
DRAM Constraints and Anticipated Demand
Component supply bottlenecks have significantly impacted manufacturing stock. TechPowerUp reports that Sony has engaged with major DRAM manufacturers Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron to help secure memory components for PlayStation 5 hardware as global supply remains tight.
The allocation system aims to prioritize active PlayStation players seeking performance upgrades ahead of high-profile game releases such as Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to drive substantial demand for current-generation console hardware.
